The honest 2026 guide — WordPress, priced in the open

What a WordPress website costs in Australia.

WordPress runs a huge share of the web, which means WordPress quotes span everything from a weekend template job to a six-figure custom build. This page publishes the real 2026 ranges, the hourly rates behind them, and the one cost trap the invoices never mention.

In 2026, a professionally built small-business WordPress website in Australia costs A$3,000–8,000. Premium custom WordPress builds run A$8,000–85,000, and WordPress specialists charge A$100–250+/hour, against offshore rates of A$20–80/hour with real IP and privacy trade-offs. Our own price is fixed and published: a custom-themed 5–8 page WordPress site is A$9,500 — no page-builder bloat — launched in 3–4 weeks, held for 30 days, scope-locked in writing.

The 2026 WordPress rate card

Market ranges, hourly rates, our fixed price.

WordPress pricing only makes sense when you see both tables: what projects cost, and what the people building them charge per hour. Here are both, in the open.

Why WordPress quotes vary 10x

What actually moves the price.

The page-builder trap — read this before anything else. The cheapest WordPress quotes are cheap because the "design" is a page builder — Elementor, Divi, WPBakery — layered over a purchased theme. It works on day one. The costs arrive later: heavier pages that drag on Core Web Vitals, a plugin stack that must be licensed and patched forever, layouts held together by shortcodes that break when the builder updates, and a site that quietly becomes unmaintainable — at which point the fix is a rebuild, and the A$3k site becomes the most expensive one you ever bought. A custom theme costs more up front because someone writes the code; it costs less every year after. That fork — builder versus custom theme — explains more of the WordPress price spread than any other single driver, and it's why our WordPress builds are custom-themed only.

Page count and content. 5–8 pages are included in our base; 9–15 pages add A$2,800, 16–30 pages add A$6,500, professional copywriting adds A$1,900.

Integrations and plugins. WordPress's superpower is its ecosystem, and wiring it up properly — CRM, email platform, bookings (+A$1,400), your line-of-business systems — is real engineering. We price integrations at +A$1,600 per cluster; hourly shops can burn far more when a plugin conflict eats a week.

Who's holding the risk. At A$100–250+/hour, an open-ended hourly engagement is where WordPress budgets go to grow. A fixed quote keeps the estimate risk with the builder — which is why ours are fixed, published and scope-locked.

Our price vs the market

Why we start above the SMB band — on purpose.

Our A$9,500 entry sits just above the A$3–8k SMB market range, and the reason is the paragraph above: the market band includes a lot of page-builder work, and we don't sell any. Every Flagship WordPress build is a hand-coded custom theme — faster pages, no builder licence treadmill, and code you fully own, with 100% IP assignment in plain English. The build also includes what others charge retainers for, at A$0: the AI-visibility (GEO) pack, analytics, launch SEO and 30 days of care. Against the A$8–85k premium custom band, our A$15–40k tier covers most of what businesses actually need from it. If WordPress may not be the right platform at all, compare the Framer and Webflow guides — we build on all three, so the recommendation is honest. Questions people actually ask

Straight answers.

How much does a WordPress website cost in Australia?
In 2026: A$3–8k for a professionally built small-business site, A$8–85k for premium custom builds, with WordPress specialists charging A$100–250+/hour. Our own price is fixed and published: A$9,500 for a custom-themed 5–8 page site, A$12,300 for 9–15 pages, A$16,000 for 16–30 pages. The 2-minute quote builds your exact number line by line.
Why is a custom theme dearer than a page-builder site?
Because someone writes the code instead of assembling it. A page-builder site is cheaper on day one and pays for it afterwards: heavier pages, plugin licences, patch-forever maintenance, and layouts that break with builder updates until a rebuild is the only fix. A custom theme is lighter, faster, fully yours, and cheaper to keep — which is why we only build custom themes, and why the up-front price starts at A$9,500 rather than A$3,000.
What do WordPress developers charge per hour in Australia?
Specialists run A$100–250+/hour in 2026; offshore teams advertise A$20–80/hour. The hourly number matters less than the engagement shape: hourly billing moves the risk of a bad estimate onto you. We don't bill hourly at all — every project is a fixed, published, scope-locked price, so the risk stays with us.
Is a cheap offshore WordPress site worth it?
Sometimes, with eyes open. A$20–80/hour looks compelling against A$100–250+, but the recurring failure modes are expensive: IP assignment never put in writing (under s196 of the Copyright Act, copyright assignment must be written — no document can mean you don't own your own website), Privacy Act exposure when customer data is handled overseas, and teams that vanish after handover. Whoever you choose, get written IP assignment covering every contributor.
What's included in the A$9,500 fixed price?
A custom-designed, custom-themed 5–8 page WordPress site — no page builder, no purchased theme — built by senior Australian engineers: design, build, CMS setup and launch. Plus, at A$0: the AI-visibility (GEO) pack (schema, llms.txt, entity wiring), analytics, launch SEO, 30 days of care, and 100% IP assignment in plain English. Add-ons are on the rate card.
What are the ongoing costs of a WordPress site?
Hosting (you own the stack, so you choose the host), plus updates, backups and security patching — which either you do, or a care plan does. Ours run A$190–990/month, the first 30 days are free on every build, and plans are optional: with full IP assignment, declining one never holds your site hostage. Beware retainers priced like ours that are actually just automated plugin updates.
Should I choose WordPress, Webflow or Framer?
WordPress when you want to own the whole stack, lean on the plugin ecosystem, or run a blog-heavy or integration-heavy site. Webflow for content-heavy marketing sites a team edits weekly. Framer for fast, motion-rich marketing sites. Ours start at A$9,500, A$8,500 and A$7,500 respectively — we sell all three, so the advice has no thumb on the scale.
Is the price really fixed?
Yes. The number from the calculator is the number on your proposal if the scope we confirm on a 20-minute call matches what you ticked, held for 30 days and scope-locked: if we misjudge the effort for the written scope, the difference is our cost, not your invoice.
